Take your onion rings to the next level!

Personally, I’ll take crispy beer battered onion rings over French fries any day of the week! They’re crispy, flavorful, and surprisingly addictive! Add a little powdered ranch and white cheddar seasoning and you’re in for the best appetizer of your life! So if you’re looking for a snack for your next gameday or pretty much any day of the week, dive right into this recipe!

  • The technique– Traditionally, most onion rings are dipped in a flour mixture and fried. However, this recipe coats the rings up quite nicely!
  • The onions used– Many people would recommend using white onions for onion rings. However, I prefer the flavor of Vidalia onions (or sweet onions) for this. As with any recipe, you get what you prefer. This is simply a suggestion on my end for making the perfect beer battered rings!
  • The beer used– Again, my preference, but I love the taste of Corona! Although I’m not a beer connoisseur, Corona is perfect for this recipe! I have seen a lot of restaurants use darker lagers so try different varieties and see what works for you!

  • Vidalia (sweet) onions
  • Beer
  • Seasonings
  • Eggs
  • All purpose flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Baking powder
  • Oil
  • Ranch Seasoning
  • White Cheddar seasoning

  • Make sure your oil is piping hot (365-375 degrees to be exact) as this will allow the batter to quickly catch to the oil. Hotter temperatures=crispier onion rings that are perfectly beer battered.
  • Soak the onions in ice cold water first then dry completely before adding them to the dry mixture. This removes that strong flavor onions are known for and makes for a more edible bite.
  • If you have any excess left over, then you have more will power than I do! But seriously, you can easily reheat these beer battered onion rings in the air fryer to maintain their crispiness!

Instructions

  1. Peel your onions of their outer shell.
  2. Slice the onions into thick rings removing any excess "onion skin" and the shell.
  3. Soak your rings in ice cold water for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Pat dry completely, then place your onion rings to the side.
  5. Grab two large bowls to prepare your dry and wet batters.
  6. In the first bowl, add flour, cornstarch, and baking powder.
  7. Mix until well combined.
  8. In the second bowl, add the flour, cornstarch, seasonings, egg, and begin to whisk in the beer. Add in a little bit at a time until you get a thick but runny batter. It should be enough to coat the onion rings, but not be watery at all.
  9. Mix until well combined.
  10. Add oil to a shallow pot and heat until it reaches an internal temperature of 365-375 degrees F (180-190 degrees C).
  11. Once the oil is hot, dip your onion rings into the dry batter, then immediately into the wet.
  12. Add the rings to the hot oil and cook for about 5-7 minutes flipping about halfway through.
  13. Cook until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  14. Add to a wire rack to remove any excess oil.
  15. Add the onion rings to a large enough bowl and sprinkle with ranch and white cheddar seasoning.
  16. Toss to allow the seasonings to fully coat the onion rings.
  17. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Smart move on the ice water. I wonder if keeping the onions in the fridge would have the same effect.

    Can’t wait to try!

They would likely dry out but I can always try that way and see what the outcome is.
