Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the shaved steak or Steak-ums until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks.
  2. Add diced onions and sauté for 3–4 minutes, until the onions are soft and slightly caramelized.
  3. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese until melted and creamy. Let the mixture cool slightly.
  5. Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean surface.
  6. Place about 1 heaping teaspoon of the cheesesteak mixture in the center of each wrapper.
  7. Lightly moisten the edges of the wrapper with water using your finger.
  8. Fold the wrapper diagonally into a triangle and press the edges to seal, removing air pockets. For a tighter seal, crimp the edges with a fork or fold them into a traditional wonton shape.
  9. Add oil to a cast iron or a shallow bottom pot.
  10. Heat until the oil reaches 350°F (175°C).
  11. Fry wontons in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  12. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  13. Serve warm with your choice of dipping sauces and enjoy.
